SSNP 315 | Joker: The Spoilerific Review Show (feat. @DrAprylA)
Tuesday Oct 08, 2019
Tuesday Oct 08, 2019
The most infamous film release (so far!) of 2019 is finally here. In this episode, the SSN Crew and special guest Dr. Apryl review Todd Phillips' equally praised and maligned "Joker," based (very) loosely on Batman's comic-book archenemy.
Is it the masterpiece the film festivals praised it as or an embarrassment to real fans of DC Comics? Will Joaquin Phoenix win the Oscar? Did seeing the picture turn us all into murderous incels? All of these questions and more are answered within!
Wait, what is this fedora doing on my head?

We also discuss how filmmakers such as Ava DuVernay and cinematographer Bradford Young are pushing for improvements in how Black people appear in cinema.

Wednesday Sep 25, 2019
Wednesday Sep 25, 2019
Everything that ain't tied down is getting "rebooted"! Where are the original ideas?! Sitting in drawers unmade because YOU (yes, you!) would rather go see superheroes and CGI lions at your local bijou!

We give our takes on which of these (if any!) will make it. Plus - we celebrate Janet Jackson's "Rhythm Nation 1814" turning 30, little Spanky McFarland running around in blackface 80 years ago, dive into Netflix's "Big Mouth" (!), and hope that Dobie Gillis can get his errant cousin Shane Gillis together.

Oh, the indignation and injustice! Felicity Huffman has been sentenced to fourteen whole days in prison for paying to have her daughter's SAT scores "enhanced", while Lori Loughlin (Aunt Becky) continues to stand up in her defiance after also paying for illegal "help" for her daughters' college admissions. In this episode, LaTria pitches the SSN Crew on an Academy Award-worthy film version of the Huffman/Laoughlin college admissions scandal, with A-list cast, crew, and an interesting choice of producers!

SSNPTV | Netflix & Ava DuVernay’s When They See Us
Wednesday Sep 18, 2019
Wednesday Sep 18, 2019
The 1989 New York City trials involving the five teenaged boys then known as the "Central Park Five" represented a notable example of the injustices and mistreatment Black people often suffer in the United States. In this episode, the SSN Crew reviews Ava DuVernay's acclaimed four-part miniseries, which dramatizes the lives of Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Corey Richardson, Raymond Santanna, and Korey Wise both before and after they were framed for the sexual and physical assault of a young white woman jogger and sent to prison for crimes they did not commit.
